I wanted to create an environment that used some assets I had so that I could experiment with instancing and shading environments. The feel I was going for was a makeshift outpost that pirates were using to survey the tropical island they had come upon.
For the terrain I made multiple masks and eroded sections to get the final form. The spires were created using boxes which I converted to VDB so I could use a volume VOP to add noise inside the box and then convert that to a polygon, this made them a procedural asset I could change whenever I wanted. The trees were SpeedTree assets I created and instanced using RedShift proxies as placeholders to optimize the scenes size. The rest of the assets were created in Houdini as well following procedural workflows.
